TORROX VILLAGE AND TORROX COSTA

Torrox Village

Torrox lies approximately 45km from Malaga Airport and 4 km from the sea. A traditional white village of some size, it retains charm and character and many
of its narrow lanes are decorated with hanging baskets and flower boxes.

The centre is very pretty with brilliant white-washed houses clinging to the steep slope on which the town is built.

There are many winding streets and squares where you can sit and laze the day away drinking locally made wines and dining on local specialities like Patatas a la Pobre ( poor potatoes), gazpaco de

tomate ( cold tomato soup ) and the famous Migas
( dried bread crumbs with garlic) traditionally served with fish.

Property here is sought after - Torrox enjoys wonderful views over the mountains and the sea, unsurpassed in the area.

Protected by the Sierra Tejeda mountain range, Torrox claims the Best Climate in Europe . With an average of 300 days of sunshine every year, people of all ages are able to enjoy the outdoors nearly all the time - that combined with a Mediterranean diet makes the area a healthy place to be !

Torrox Village has many festivals and feasts throughout the year such as la Candelaria ( September 7- 8 ), the night of San Juan ( June the 24 ), the Cruces de Mayo ( May 2-3 ) and the famous feasts of Las Migas ( last Sunday before Christmas ). All are great opportunities to enjoy the singing and dancing as well as the local sweet wines and produce.

Torrox reached the height of its powers under Moorish occupation around the 11 th Century, as it had a vital role in the silk trade between Granada and the Middle East. The style of the village and its layout owes much to the Moorish style. Torrox also has thermal baths dating back to the 16th century as well as many historical buildings and monuments such as the Convent and Hermitage of the Virgen de las Nieves, the towers of its old walled enclosure which according to some historians may have been the birthplace of Almanzor, the Church of San Roque, the Hospital of San Jose and the Sugar Factory from the 19th century.

Another very worth while visit is the House of the Moorish Kings, which dates from the 18th century and has the most wonderful gardens, and has access to the underground mines built by Abomelik in the 14th century.

Torrox Costa

4km to the south is Torrox Costa, Torrox Villages modern coastal offshoot. Wide sandy beaches are bordered by a long paseo or promenade, lined with bars, restaurants and shops - perfect for enjoying the average 30 degree summer temperatures. The area has excellent facilities with shops, restaurants and cafes, banks, doctors and health care.

Not to be outdone by the Villages long and interesting history, the Costa is also the site of the remains of a Roman necropolis and villa located just west of the lighthouse.

Communications are also very good, about 45

minutes drive from Malaga or 10 minutes from Nerja
by Motorway, or alternatively take the slower scenic coastal route. Roads are modern and buildings are reasonably new in this expanding area of the coast - apartments and villas are usually the order of the day. This up and coming area is now often referred to as the New Golden Mile - demonstrating its popularity and strong return on investment. Various new projects are currently under construction including a superb new golf course just outside the town.

Although predominantly Spanish, the area is quite cosmopolitan and has residents and holiday makers from all over Europe . Numerous supermarkets line the main road - perfect if you're resident or self catering and don't want to take the car out. Alternatively Velez Malaga with its shopping centres is only 15 minutes away. Torrox Costa is a quiet and family orientated resort, unlike many of its counterparts to the west of Malaga.
