Nerja
About 45 minutes drive from Malaga Airport, and a few km east from Torrox lies Nerja. Originally a fishing village, Nerja has a history dating back some 30,000 years, as depicted in cave paintings at the Cuevas de Nerja. Today the town has some 15,000 residents and enjoys an average temperature of just under 20 degrees.
The old part of the town is still very much in the Andalucian style with narrow winding streets and white washed houses with wrought iron terraces and flower baskets. The outskirts of Nerja are much more modern and have a few urbanisations with villas and townhouses as well as apartment blocks. The town is well served in terms of facilities and has an excellent range of shops, bars, restaurants ( with a truly international cuisine ), markets, banks, doctors and health care etc etc.
Down on the Burriana Beach, one of the finest beaches on the Costa del Sol, you'll find a range of beach side restaurants many of which specialise in fish and shellfish. Many of the beaches around Nerja offer watersports like jet skiing, water skiing and sailing etc and the diving is some of the best in the region.
On dry land, there are plenty of activities from horse riding, hiking and walking to cycling to tennis, squash, golf and a whole range of other sports to take part in. In the evenings while away the time by taking a stroll through the town or on the Balcon, visit the night market or take dinner and drinks al fresco. The caves of Nerja ( Cuevas de Nerja ) were discovered by accident relatively recently, and are not yet fully explored, but part of them is open for a visit and you can even take in a live music or dancing show there too.
The Motorway from Malaga now extends right down to Nerja so communications are very good, and Nerja has become a great base to explore the region from. To the north a 2 hour drive will take you to the Alhambra Palace at Granada, or on the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada - even Seville and Cordoba are within driving distance. Closer to home, half an hour away is Lake Vinuela and the wine and olive routes of Axarquia - follow these from village to village sampling their produce as you go.
To the east you'll find La Herradura and the town of Almunecar, home of Almunecar International School, and of course the pretty Marina del Este for the sailing enthusiasts. Just a couple of km outside Nerja is the delightful village of Frigiliana - a typical white washed village also steeped in history - the site of many battles, the most famous one being the Battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended with the expulsion of the Moors.
There a various fiestas throughout the year but the most important celebrations are the 15th May, and the 10th October, the great procession of San Isidro, and in July the procession of the Virgen del Carmen. Fish with paprika, clams and migas ( fried breadcrumbs ), and the cake Torta Sanjuanera are some of the local traditional dishes.
All these things make Nerja a sought after location, for residents and holiday makers alike.
