Axarquia Region
Axarquia is a beautiful region of Andalucia, steeped in history. Its geography is diverse and boasts long sandy beaches, rugged mountains, national parks and an inland lake.
Known for having one of the best climates in Europe, its 50km of coastline maintains mild temperatures throughout the winter, and yet only two hours drive will take you skiing in the Sierra Nevada. With an average of 8.3 hours of sun every day, sunbathing on the beach or skiing in the mountains – the choice is yours !
The regions capital Velez Malaga is just on the north
side of Torre del Mar, 5 mins from the sea, and has
excellent shopping, waterpark and facilities. The main East West motorway from Malaga to Nerja runs right through the town and Malaga Airport is only about half an hour away. 15 minutes drive north of Velez is Lake Vinuela, one the areas main attractions. This area is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year and many kinds of activities are available from walking, running, cycling, hiking and boating to bird watching, painting and sight-seeing or even just relaxing in one of the numerous bars and restaurants that dot the lakeside.
Olives, almonds and vines cover many of the hillsides, and there are plenty of routes to follow from village to village where you can sample their local produce. The sub tropical temperatures mean that fruits thrive here such as oranges, lemons, bananas, kiwis, chirimoyas, even mangoes, avocados and eucalyptus. Wild herbs and lavender grow everywhere and further up the foothills and mountain slopes there are pine, oak and carob trees.
While exploring the interior and visiting the white villages or pueblos blancos you'll often come across goat herders and shepherds tending their flocks and smallholders taking their produce to market, a reminder that traditional values still hold fast and that the " old Spain " is still alive here. Many of the villages in the area were first settled during the Moors occupation many centuries ago. Their legacy lives on in the town and street names, and of course the style and architecture of the buildings. Each village has their own annual fiestas and events with parties lasting days on end – religious processions and a heady mix of singing, dancing, food and wine. Notable villages to visit would include Torrox, Competa, Periana, Canillas and Benamargosa.
On the coast, you'll find a number of towns such as Nerja, Torrox Costa and Torre del Mar as well as old fishing villages like Mezquitilla and Lagos. Freshly caught fish are still part of the local diet, so be sure to visit some of the excellent fishmongers and fish restaurants.
The resort towns have an excellent range of facilities, bars and restaurants, and a truly international cuisine – something for all the family. With Nerja and Torrox only about 45 minutes drive from Malaga Airport , its an easy destination to reach, even for a weekend break.
The beaches offer a variety of watersports from water skiing, canoeing and sailing to paragliding and scuba diving – and for those who prefer to stay on dry land there's always quad biking, go karting or just a beach towel. In the warm evenings stroll along the promenades, or the Balcon de Europa in Nerja, visit a night market or take in a show at the Caves of Nerja ( Cuevas de Nerja ).
